How it is made

  • From NHTSA's two files of crash reports for automated driving systems: the archive (July 2021 to June 2025) and the reports filed under the 2025 amended order.
  • Only the newest version of each report is kept.
  • Reports of the same crash, from updates or from more than one company, are merged into one row using NHTSA's Same Incident ID. The row describes the crash as the operating company reported it, and carries the most serious injury any of its reports alleges.
  • Company names are merged across their spellings (“Waymo LLC”, “Waymo, LLC.”), and a crash a fleet partner reported is credited to the company operating the vehicle.
  • Reports whose newest version says a driver-assistance system, not an automated driving system, was engaged are left out (15 in the latest import). NHTSA publishes those crashes in its separate Level 2 file.
  • Narratives, vehicle identification numbers, street addresses and coordinates are never copied, though NHTSA publishes some of them.
