🔭 Scientist spotlight

Vera Rubin 1928–2016 · Astronomy

Vera Rubin was an American astronomer whose groundbreaking observations of galaxy rotation curves provided the first robust evidence for the existence of dark matter. By studying how stars moved within galaxies, she demonstrated that there was much more mass present than what was visible to telescopes. Her work fundamentally altered our understanding of the universe's composition and the large-scale structure of the cosmos.

The Unit Fraction Method

Egyptian fractions are a way of representing any positive rational number as a sum of distinct unit fractions, which are fractions with a numerator of one. For example, instead of writing 3/4, an ancient Egyptian scribe might express it as 1/2 + 1/4. This method turns complex division into a series of simple, additive steps.
